Unlocking Mysteries: A Deep Dive into the Enigmatic World of Blue Prince

After years dedicated to creating games and films for other people, the developer Dogubomb is excited to finally craft their own project. This new endeavor takes shape in the enigmatic puzzle game Blue Prince.

The storyline of Blue Prince centers around the protagonist, who is given a quest by their late uncle to uncover the 46th room in his 45-room residence. This title presents a visually captivating experience that goes beyond the typical first-person puzzle game. By merging components of strategy games with aspects of tabletop board games, it offers a novel perspective on a genre often viewed as exclusive yet seemingly perfected.

During this year's Gamescom event in Cologne, Ben Lyons, Editor-In-Chief at Gamereactor UK, had the opportunity to converse with Tonda Ros from Dogubomb about Blue Prince. Ros shared that many of their inspirations stem from literature and board games. A considerable number of game mechanics are influenced by drafting strategies found in beloved games such as Magic the Gathering, Agricola, and Notre Dame. These ideas are intertwined with concepts from Ros's favorite book, Maze by Christopher Manson, which involves navigating a house filled with secrets.

Ros explained that various story and puzzle elements are intricately woven into the game's structure, naturally guiding players to discover them. The sequence in which players encounter these elements will vary based on their exploration.

Commenting on the distinctive problem-solving methods within the game, he noted that players can employ strategies to advance in situations where they struggle with puzzles. Focusing solely on strategy can be a valid option for those who prefer to skip puzzle-solving. He also mentioned that newer players might find the drafting mechanics and avoiding dead ends quite challenging, but it's a skill that can be developed with practice. The game encourages players to hone their abilities without providing too much guidance.

He added that players proficient in puzzle-solving can unlock advantages that make strategic gameplay less daunting. Thus, individuals who favor either strategy or puzzle-solving will find enjoyable pathways to progress in Blue Prince. You can view the complete interview with Ros, where he elaborates on his favorite aspects of the game and the inspiration behind its impressive artistic design.
