Sag-Aftra Reaches An Agreement For The Utilization Of Artificial Intelligence In Gaming Productions

Despite SAG-AFTRA dedicating a substantial portion of 2023 to battling the rise of AI and advocating for improved working conditions, one might expect its members to harbor a unanimous opposition to the technology. However, a recent announcement indicates a surprising collaboration between the union and Replica, focusing on using AI-generated voices in video games.

According to a statement on the SAG-AFTRA website, "Approved by the voiceover performers within the union who are impacted by this change, this agreement is a milestone in the responsible utilization of AI voices within the realm of video game production. It also lays the groundwork for safeguarding fair working conditions for voice actors and allows them to tap into new sources of revenue that AI technology brings forth."

The union's stance on this development is decidedly optimistic. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher commented:

"In an era where artificial intelligence is a major topic of conversation, a SAG-AFTRA contract remains the strongest safeguard for performers against the unauthorized digital duplication of their voice, appearance, or performance. Our collaboration with Replica Studios is a prime example of using AI technology responsibly."

As we await the long-term outcomes of this endeavor, there is a palpable tension, especially with concerns that movie and television actors might be better protected against the unethical use of AI to replicate their performances. In contrast, video game voice actors might not receive the same protection against such exploits.
