Reviving Nostalgia: Mappa Announces Ranma ½ Remake on Netflix for 2024 Launch

The anime studio responsible for Attack on Titan is bringing a new version of a beloved '90s show to Netflix, and it has just released its first trailer. Attention all '90s anime enthusiasts: Mappa, the studio behind Attack on Titan, is creating a remake of the well-loved multi-genre series Ranma ½, which will be available on Netflix starting October 5, 2024.

The announcement came from Netflix Japan via Twitter. The streaming service released the official show trailer accompanied by the caption, “Introducing the new anime Ranma ½.”" Along with the trailer, Netflix provided a brief summary: "After training, Ranma acquires a mysterious constitution that allows him to turn back into a woman when poured with water, and a man when poured with hot water." The tweet can be viewed in full below.

The series is based on the late '80s to early '90s manga of the same name, written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi. The original anime debuted in 1989 and lasted for seven seasons. This fantasy-action-romance-comedy revolves around a young martial artist named Ranma, who falls under a curse that causes him to transform into a girl when splashed with cold water. The story further complicates as he strives to win over Akane Tendō, a female martial arts expert who is not interested in men.

The trailer suggests that the remake will closely follow the original storyline and the manga. More excitingly, the original voice actors are returning, including Kappei Yamaguchi as male Ranma, Megumi Hayashibara as female Ranma, and Noriko Hidaka as Akane Tendō. Other familiar characters such as Nabiki Tendō, Kasumi Tendō, Ryōga Hibiki, Shampoo, Sōun Tendō, and Genma Saotome will also make a comeback.

This remake is being brought into modern times by Mappa, one of the leading anime studios known for producing hit shows like Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen, which is gearing up for its third season. The remake boasts an impressive team with Kōnosuke Uda from One Piece directing the series and Kimiko Ueno of Delicious in Dungeon fame handling the script.

Ranma ½ will premiere on Netflix Japan on October 5. For those eager for more, check out our curated list of top anime or stay updated on the new anime releases coming in 2024.
